In his 39 years as a Democrat congressman from Texas, Senator Morris Sheppard was known as a great statesman, orator and scholar who worked tirelessly on behalf of his constituency. During his tenure, he served on several congressional committees, including commerce, manufacturers, and irrigation and reclamation, eventually chairing the Senate military affairs committee. He championed legislation concerning the Selective Service Act, women's suffrage and Lend-Lease. He is perhaps best known as the "father of prohibition," sponsoring the Eighteenth Amendment which provided for a nation-wide ban on alcohol consumption. In recognition of his devotion to his country and many contributions to the legislative branch of government, SMU was honored to confer upon Morris Sheppard the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
